About the event
The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store, 28 weeks on the NY Times Best Seller Book List, will be discussed at the next monthly JCO Book Club meeting on Thursday, March 28 at noon in the social hall.
Written by James McBride, master storyteller and award-winner, the book features immigrant Jews and African Americans who live side by side in a small Pennsylvania community beginning in the 1930s. A reviewer from the NYT described the book as "a murder mystery locked inside a Great American Novel."
McBride's father was an African-American reverend and his mother was a Jewish immigrant from Poland and daughter of an Orthodox rabbi. She later converted to Christianity.
The discussion will be led by congregant and Board member Sheila Cohn. Attendance is free of charge.
Feel free to come early with a bag lunch at 11:30 to schmooze and eat before the discussion begins.
